The Messenger 24-Hour Rule Explained for Businesses

Meta gives your page 24 hours to reply freely after a customer writes. Here is what the Messenger 24-hour rule allows in 2026, what changes after the window closes, and how to plan around it.

A customer messages your page on Friday night to ask if the black abaya comes in size 40. Your team replies on Saturday and she goes quiet. On Monday, your system sends an automatic follow-up with a 10% discount code. Meta rejects it. This is the Messenger 24-hour rule at work, and every business that sells in chat runs into it sooner or later. Here is what the rule says in 2026, what you can still do after the window closes, and how to plan your messages so you never lock yourself out of a sale.

What the Messenger 24-hour rule says

When a person sends your Facebook Page a message, a 24-hour window opens. Inside that window you can reply with anything that follows Meta's policies: answers, photos, product links, automated messages, even promotions. Each new message from the person resets the clock to a fresh 24 hours.

When 24 hours pass with no new message from them, the window closes. From then on, your page cannot send automated or promotional messages to that person until they write again.

Instagram Direct works the same way for professional accounts. If you sell on both, plan for one rule, not two.

What reopens the window

The window opens or resets when the person acts in the chat: they send a message, tap a button or quick reply in your conversation, or reply to your Instagram story.

After 24 hours: the human agent exception

Meta allows one main exception. A real person on your team can still reply for up to 7 days after the customer's last message, using the HUMAN_AGENT tag. Your messaging tool needs Meta's approval to use this tag, and it must only go on messages that a person wrote.

The tag exists for support, not sales. Good uses: answering a question you missed over the weekend, or sending a tracking number a customer asked for. Bad uses: a bot message with the tag, or an offer sent to everyone who wrote last week.

After 7 days, even a person on your team cannot start a new message. The customer has to write first.

What changed: no more one-time or recurring notifications

For a few years, Meta offered ways to message people later with their consent. One-time notifications let a customer ask for a single alert, such as a restock. Recurring notifications let them opt in to regular updates. Both features have been retired. Older guides that tell you to collect "notify me" opt-ins are out of date.

Meta's paid route for reaching people outside the window is called Marketing Messages. It is not available in Morocco, the European Union or the United Kingdom. So if you sell in these markets, a promotional broadcast can only go to people who wrote to you in the last 24 hours.

What you can send, at a glance

  • Inside 24 hours: anything that follows Meta's policies, automated or manual, including offers and product links.
  • From 24 hours to 7 days: replies written by a person on your team, with the HUMAN_AGENT tag, for support. No bots, no promotions.
  • After 7 days: nothing until the customer sends a new message.
  • Comments: one private reply per comment, within 7 days of the comment. It opens a conversation only when the person answers.

That last line is why comment campaigns matter so much in these markets. Our guide to comment-to-DM automation that turns comments into leads shows how to do it without breaking the rules.

How to plan your messages around the window

The Messenger 24-hour rule rewards speed and punishes silence. These habits keep conversations open.

Answer within hours, not days

Look at when your messages arrive. If most come at night, a reply at 10 the next morning still fits inside the window, but a Monday reply to a Friday message does not. An automated first answer replies in seconds and asks something back.

End every message with a question

Each customer reply resets the clock. So close your messages with something easy to answer: "Which colour?", "Delivery to Rabat or Casablanca?", "Shall I reserve it for you?" A conversation that keeps moving stays open.

Send the key details early

Do not save the price, delivery cost or payment options for later. If you sell with cash on delivery, confirm the address and phone number while the person is still in the chat. Our guide to social selling with cash on delivery in African markets has a full order checklist.

Keep follow-up sequences short

A drip sequence that waits three days before its first reminder will hit a closed window. Design follow-ups to fit inside 24 hours: one message a few hours after a question, and a last one before the day runs out. In IGNIPOST, drip sequences and chat flows run inside the window, and Messenger and Instagram DMs sit in one inbox with your comments, so a Friday message does not hide in a separate app until Monday. Read more about the unified social media inbox.

Open your inbox today and look at the conversations from the last week. Count how many customers waited more than 24 hours for an answer. If the number is high, set up an automated first reply for your three most common questions, and shorten any follow-up sequence so it ends before the window closes. If you want help mapping these rules to your own pages, contact the IGNIPOST team.

Frequently asked questions

Can I send a promotion to customers who messaged me last month?

Not through Messenger if you sell in Morocco, the EU or the UK. Promotions are allowed only inside the 24-hour window after the customer's last message, and Meta's Marketing Messages product is not available in those markets. Post the offer publicly instead, or run a comment campaign so interested customers write to you again and open a new window.

Does the Messenger 24-hour rule apply to Instagram DMs?

Yes. Instagram Direct for professional accounts follows the same model: a 24-hour window after each customer message, a human agent exception for up to 7 days, and one private reply per comment within 7 days of that comment. If your team handles both channels, you can train everyone on one set of rules instead of two.

What happens if I break the rule?

Messages sent outside the window without a valid reason are rejected by Meta and never reach the customer. Repeated misuse, such as tagging bot messages as human replies, can lead Meta to restrict your page's messaging or remove your app's access. Staying inside the rules protects the channel you depend on for daily sales and support.
